Format facts

HEIC
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format on iPhone and iPad.
Transparency
Can support transparency, though iPhone camera photos are typically opaque.
Typical use
The format iPhone photos are saved in by default since iOS 11; many Windows apps and websites cannot open it.
Browser support
Not decodable natively in most browsers, so this tool converts it in your browser before export.
JPG
JPEG (JPG) is a lossy raster format that compresses photos by discarding some image detail.
Transparency
No transparency support; any transparent area is filled with white when converting to JPG.
Typical use
The standard format for photos and social media uploads, where file size matters more than pixel-perfect detail.
Browser support
Supported everywhere; adjustable quality trades file size for sharpness.

Why do iPhone photos need converting?

iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC by default since iOS 11. It is an efficient format, but many Windows apps, older software, and some websites cannot open it without a converter.

Converting to JPG makes the photo open everywhere a camera photo normally would, at the cost of HEIC's extra compression efficiency.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my HEIC photo open on my Windows PC?

Windows and many third-party apps do not support HEIC out of the box. Converting to JPG fixes that without installing a codec.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

There is some additional compression during the JPG re-encode; use the quality slider to minimize visible loss.

Will Live Photos convert correctly?

This tool converts the still HEIC image. The separate video portion of a Live Photo is not included in the JPG.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens locally in your browser, and no sign-up is required.
