Format facts

HEIC
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format on iPhone and iPad.
Transparency
Can support transparency, though iPhone camera photos are typically opaque.
Typical use
The format iPhone photos are saved in by default since iOS 11; many Windows apps and websites cannot open it.
Browser support
Not decodable natively in most browsers, so this tool converts it in your browser before export.
PNG
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster format that keeps the exact value of every pixel.
Transparency
Supports full alpha transparency, so a transparent background stays transparent.
Typical use
Common for screenshots, logos, and graphics with sharp edges that need a transparent background.
Browser support
Supported natively by every modern browser and OS; this tool's only limit is the 50 MiB upload cap.

Why convert HEIC to PNG instead of JPG?

Most iPhone photos convert fine to JPG, but PNG is the better choice when you need a lossless copy, plan to edit the image further, or the HEIC file includes transparency, such as some stickers or app-exported graphics.

This tool decodes the HEIC file in your browser, then re-encodes it as a lossless PNG so no additional JPEG compression is introduced.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows?

HEIC support is inconsistent outside Apple devices. Converting to PNG makes the photo open in any image viewer, editor, or website.

Does the PNG keep the original photo quality?

Yes. PNG is lossless, so converting from HEIC does not introduce JPEG-style compression artifacts.

Will this work for Live Photos?

This tool converts the still HEIC image; the separate video portion of a Live Photo is not included.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens locally in your browser, and no sign-up is required.
