Format facts

GIF
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is an older raster format best known for simple animations.
Transparency
Supports single-color transparency, but only 256 colors total, so photos look banded.
Typical use
Used for short looping animations and simple icons, rarely for photos because of its limited color palette.
Browser support
Supported everywhere; this tool exports only the first frame of an animated GIF, on a white background.
JPG
JPEG (JPG) is a lossy raster format that compresses photos by discarding some image detail.
Transparency
No transparency support; any transparent area is filled with white when converting to JPG.
Typical use
The standard format for photos and social media uploads, where file size matters more than pixel-perfect detail.
Browser support
Supported everywhere; adjustable quality trades file size for sharpness.

What happens to GIF animation when converting to JPG?

JPG cannot store animation or multiple frames, so this tool keeps only the first frame of the GIF and discards the rest. Keep the original GIF file if you need the animation; this converter is for turning a GIF into a single still image.

GIF also limits images to 256 colors, so converting to JPG can smooth out some of the color banding visible in the original.

Frequently asked questions

Will the JPG include the whole GIF animation?

No. GIF has no equivalent in JPG, so only the first frame is exported as a still JPG image.

Why is the background white in the result?

If the first frame has transparent pixels, they are filled with white, since JPG does not support transparency.

Can I pick a different frame instead of the first?

Not in this tool; it always uses the first frame. Extract the frame you want with a GIF editor before uploading if you need a different one.

Can I convert several GIFs at once?

Yes, add up to 20 GIF files and download the JPG results individually or as a ZIP.
